A recent study shows the impact of Nexium (esomeprazole) and Zantac (duloxetine) on patients’ sleep quality. In a study of 24 adults, researchers showed that the use of these drugs increased the risk of sleep onset, which was more common in the elderly, and that sleep problems were more common in patients taking Nexium (esomeprazole) and Duloxetine (duloxetine).
Researchers also found that use of these drugs increased the risk of heart attack and stroke, which is also more common with these medications.
“In terms of the sleep disturbance that we see with these medications, they’re definitely important,” said lead author Dr. Nachum Katlowitz, M. D., assistant professor of medicine, Division of Cardiology, St. Thomas Johns School of Medicine and chief medical officer of St. Louis University Heart Center.
“There has been a lot of confusion about the effect of these drugs on sleep quality in the past and now it’s just a matter of time,” Katlowitz said. “But there’s really no one right answer.”
Ketlowitz said that most people are healthy when they sleep.
“Sleep disturbance is a common problem,” he said. “There’s not enough information to know if the sleep disturbance is related to the medication or to a different underlying cause.”
The study was presented at the American College of Cardiology meeting in San Antonio, Texas. It was published today in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Dr. Katlowitz said that while the study showed a potential link between these drugs and sleep disturbance, it was still unclear whether these drugs are the cause of the problem.
“There’s a lot of confusion about this as people get older,” he said. “I think it’s time for the U. S. Food and Drug Administration to take action to correct this.”
The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new warning label for Nexium and Duloxetine, which is used to treat and prevent heart problems in older adults.
The new drug label states that older people should not take these medications as they are. They also include warnings about potential side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, headache, irritability, drowsiness, nausea, and sleep problems.
The drugs, which work by blocking the production of certain hormones that cause sleepiness, are known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which are used to treat stomach ulcers.
Studies have shown that PPI use has been associated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
Katlowitz said that while the study found a potentially beneficial effect on sleep, it was not clear whether PPI use increased the risk of heart attack or stroke.
“We did not see a significant increase in heart attack or stroke,” he said. “But there are other risk factors for these problems that have not been clearly identified, like diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, smoking, high cholesterol, and sleep problems.”
Katlowitz said that while the study showed a possible association between PPIs use and heart attack and stroke, it was not clear whether PPI use increases the risk of heart attack or stroke.
“I think that’s the kind of thing that’s been going on for the past couple of years. We’re seeing this increase, but it’s not clear if it’s the cause of the problem,” he said.
The study found that use of these drugs increased the risk of heart attack and stroke. However, the researchers noted that there was no overall difference in the risk of heart attack or stroke between the two drugs.
Katlowitz said that the drugs studied were not related to sleep disturbances, and that other medications used to treat and prevent heart problems also have potential side effects.
“There is a long-term risk associated with these drugs, and the risk is higher for people with certain heart conditions,” he said. “These medications have the potential to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke, and other types of heart problems.”
“We do know that these drugs work in a different way, and they increase the risk of heart attacks and stroke,” he said.
